Frisian Flag 2018

There were several rumors around the 2017 NATO exercise that Frisian Flag is not taking place this year, but finally it took place. Also some members of our team were at Leeuwarden this year.

In advance there were some indications of one of the best Frisian Flags of the last couple of years. Similar to the last years the F-15C/D Eagles from U.S. Air Force, with six aircrafts from Air National Guards of Oregon and Massachusetts, were confirmed as participants early on. Besides german Eurofighters and numerous dutch Vipers, five polish F-16 were planned. Furthermore the Polish Air Force sent one of the highlights with three Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29A. Compared to recent years the Belgian Air Force and Portuguese Air Force were missing with its F-16s. Instead of them we could be satisfied with a high participation from France. In addition to four Mirage 2000D during last years exercise, the French Air Force sent nine Rafale B/C. Seven EF-18A/B from Spain completed this years list of participants.

On Wednesday, the 18th of April, we arrived at around 8am at Leeuwarden Air Base and the sky was clear. We decided to take photographs of the departing aircrafts – about 90 minutes later – from the parking lot next to the spotters hill. Then we headed to the other side for the arrivals of the aircrafts of the morning wave.

While taking photographs we didn’t even notice how powerful this wave was. Only in the review we counted 51 jets and the DA-20 as aerial target aircraft. According to our information just the morning wave on monday was more powerful with 52 jets. We noticed the following aircrafts during the morning wave: 3 Mirage 2000D FAF, 7 F-15C USAF, 1 F-15D USAF, 4 Rafale B FAF, 2 Rafale C FAF, 6 EF-18A AME, 4 F-16CJ PLF, 15 F-16AM RNLAF, 1 F-16BM RNLAF, 6 EF2000S GAF, 2 MiG-29A PLF, 1 DA-20 Cobham
