RIAT 2017

The Royal International Air Tattoo is well known as one of the biggest shows on the annual air show calendar. Thus it was of course no surprise that several members of the AKS team made the trip. The show is since some years gradually extended from a two-day weekend event to a three-day show including the Friday. For the spotters the Monday has in addition a special importance – departure day – with lots of afterburners, constant jet noise and some great banks in front of the crowd.

RIAT 2017 was – as all the RIATs in the past years, run to support the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and its various grants. The show is held on RAF Fairford since the 1980s, which although bearing a name linked to the RAF is mainly used by the United States Air Force. This had as welcome consequence that the US Air Force parked one of their special reconnaissance aircraft – the U-2 spy plane – in the static display. On the days before the show and during the departure day on Monday the aircraft even made some regular mission or training flights (unknown as not disclosed) showing of its spectacular zoom climb.

For spotters RIAT offers lots of possibilities for great photos. The event organisers are familiar with the wishes and needs of these visitors, providing park and view areas for the arrivals as well as several grandstands to watch the flying display during the show days and the departures on Monday as close as possible and provide even specific packages for this (FRIAT – Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo). But you can enjoy the show as well from the other, northern side of the airfield, several temporary campsites open there during RIAT and offer the possibility to see the majority of the displays.

The 2017 edition of the show included half a day flying program on Friday – and full day flying programs on Saturday and Sunday. As usual the program was packed with a combination of display teams, fighter solo displays, transporters and a static with many attractive aircraft. As the theme of the event was on the one hand 21st Century Partnerships but on the other hand the 70th anniversary of the US Air Force the participation of the US Air Force didn’t stop at the U-2. On the static you found the huge B-1B and B52 bombers, F-15s and a fly-by of current US Air Force Assets in Europe was performed. This included nice formations of F-15C and F-15Es preceded by a spectacular pass of the KC-135 tanker with its boom fully extended. Furthermore, a B-2 made the trip from Whiteman Missouri all across the Atlantic and was joined by two F-15s and then made a fly-by at the show. To cover as well the 21st century subject the F-22 Raptor as usual stunned with hard turns and pulling vapour – and the F-35A made its first flying display in UK as well. Not only the A version of the Joint Strike Fighter was shown though, as well the F-35B vertical take-off and landing model was displayed remembering the times when Harriers could be seen at RIAT dancing in the program. And to complete the USAG participation the Thunderbirds with their F-16s should not be forgotten – showing their classic display with lots of power benefiting from the use of a fighter aircraft In contrast to most other teams using a trainer).

The North American participation included next to the Americans as well a contribution from Canada – by a Chinook helicopter in nice camouflage colours and a C-17 – which brought the Chinook across the Atlantic. From this side of the ocean from UK you had among a F-35B the last appearance of Pinky, the camouflaged Tornado which was sadly off to the scrapyard soon after the show. The Typhoon display as spectacular as ever was joined by the classics – the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight with Lancaster, Spitfires and Hurricanes.

But we should not forget the appearance of lots of other spectacular assets. In the flying display the Couteau Delta with its two Mirage 2000 fighters showed their ballet, which is a display including lots of elements from their tactical mission profiles as well. Furthermore, the French participation included the Rafale Solo Display, which was crowned by an enormous bank on take-off for the spotters on Monday. A welcomed and rare sight was coming from Ukraine – two Su-27s joined by an Il-76 tanker. The solo display by the Su-27 showed perfectly the power but as well the size of this huge fighter and impressed everyone attending. On Monday the Su-27s made a parallel take-off – followed by the Il-76 which banked for the spotters!

From the south-east direction the show included some assets in addition – in shape of a trio of Hercules from Pakistan, Jordan and Israel. Other transports and tanker arrived from Sweden with another Hercules, the Silver Gams and an A400M from the German Air Force and a KC-135 from Turkey which arrived and left before and after the show to pick up the equipment of the Turkish Air Force Solo Turk F-16 display team.

This Turkish F-16 was joined in the flying display by the Belgian one, making the last appearance it the current colours before being repainted. Another fighter rarely seen today in flying was the Tornado, in a great colour scheme of Reparto Sperimentale Volo, the Italian Air Force test wing. An unofficial mini-Tigermeet was staged by the appearance of both German Tiger marked aircraft, a Tornado and a Typhoon and a Spanish F-18 Hornet as well in Tiger colours.

Finally, and as a real highlight for many enthusiasts and spotters attending, the Greek Air Force sent two of their old but strong F-4 Phantom IIs to England. These aircraft, one of them in special colours, received some special attention during the show (due to the patches etc. and for photos) and on take-off.

As in the years before, RIAT 2017 was a successful visit and an enjoyable time. We already look forward to the show in 2018!
