Good Bye Transall – Flyout C-160D

The characteristic dull hum of the C-160 Transall has fallen silent in Germany in 2021 after more than 50 years of service. The first flyout visits at the end of the 1980s also bring back memories of the C-160 Transall „The big white propeller plane with the red cross“. It was only years later that it became clear what kind of aircraft it was. At that time, it had already been in service for 20 years and a successor was perhaps planned on paper. Almost 30 years later, the Transall was the first to be decommissioned at Lufttransportgeschwader 62 in Wunstorf and replaced by the Airbus A400M.In 2017, LTG 61 in Penzig, Bavaria, was finally disbanded and the last remaining C-160 Transall were transferred to Hohn in Schleswig-Holstein. In their final years of service, they celebrated flying hour anniversaries and conducted a grand Good Bye Tour to say goodbye to the Bundeswehr and the German people.

For us, the C-160 Transall has a very great significance. On our first visit with the aircraft on a Spotterday in 2011, we had the opportunity to photograph an aircraft in the air for the first time. This was the then 50+85 anniversary aircraft with which we were granted three flybys. We had no idea what was coming and were thrilled with the result.

Five years later, it buzzed next to us again. We met the specially painted 50+95, 60 years LTG 63 over the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea and flew together with her to the mouth of the Weser in Bremerhaven.

Flughafenjubiläum in Lübeck.

When the Transport Air Wing 61 in Penzig was disbanded, the Silber Gams 51+01 showed up at several events abroad and at home. Domestically, it was among others at the airport anniversary in Lübeck. For the Silber Gams it was one of the last appearances before it finally came to the museum in Werningerode. For us it was the first „outing“ with our own Cessna. For us a new aircraft, but a well-known hum next to us.

Even in the last years of their active service, the Luftwaffe’s C-160s could be seen again and again at civilian airports as well as airshows.
In March 2021, the 50+40, the „Angel of the Skies“, was finally presented to the public in Hohn. The design of the Fly Out Brummel was a mix of many Transall liveries as well as references to missions during its service with the Bundeswehr. As part of the Good Bye Tour, we were not only able to see the „Trall“ on the ground at FMO in Münster/Osnabrück and in Nörvenich, but we also had the great fortune to hear the muffled hum of the Transall next to us in the air one last time.
